Hiring
For Student-Help employees all steps in the hiring process must be completed before a student may
begin working:
1. Students are referred by the Student Employment Office to the Communication Department Coordinator who interviews the student with other employees and then makes a decision about the hiring.
2. If hired, the Coordinator will submit a Student Employment Request/Change Form. Then, the student must go to the Student Employment Office to receive the Permit-to-Work card. The card, which is available online at www.m ssu.edu/Finaid/student_employ_form.shtml, must also be signed by the Coordinator and returned to the Student Employment Office. To complete the paperwork, including W-4 forms, the student needs to bring his or her driver’s license or passport and social security card. Before a student can be considered for a renewal of any employment category, all timesheets must be submitted from the previous semester.
Time Sheets
At the end of each pay period, student help workers need to fill out timesheets for hours worked according to their time card. Student-Help employees complete yellow timesheets once a month.
When filling out time sheets, mark the dates for the start of the week on Sunday and the end date on Saturday. For the Name of the Department, write Comm Dept for the Communication Department. Make sure to fill out all the information and sign the timesheet.
When calculating your hours, round the total hours worked for the shift to the nearest quarter of an hour; e.g. 3 hrs. 40 min. is equal to 3.75 of total time while 3 hrs. 36 min, are equal to 3.5 of an hour.
Turn in the timesheet to the Center’s Coordinator on Friday at the end of the payroll period. Any time work is done outside that Lab should and MUST be written down on your timesheet.
